จิตรกรรมไทยแบบประเพณี : เป็นงานจิตรกรรมที่มีกระบวนการสร้างสรรค์ แนวความคิด กลวิธี เรื่องราวเนื้อหาสาระที่ดำรงภาพลักษณ์ และเอกลักษณ์ของงานจิตรกรรมไทยแบบประเพณี
จิตรกรรมไทยแนวประเพณี : เป็นงานจิตรกรรมที่มีกระบวนการสร้างสรรค์ แนวความคิด กลวิธี และ เรื่องราวเนื้อหาสาระที่ดำรงภาพลักษณ์ และเอกลักษณ์ของงานจิตรกรรมไทยแบบประเพณีมาพัฒนา สร้างสรรค์ใหม่ให้เข้ากับสมัยนิยม
จิตรกรรมร่วมสมัย : เป็นงานจิตรกรรมที่มีกระบวนการสร้างสรรค์ แนวความคิด กลวิธี และเรื่องราวเนื้อหาสาระที่มีการแสดงออกอย่างอิสระเสรี
หากเราจะกล่าวถึงคำว่า “จิตรกรรมไทย” สำคัญอย่างไร และมีความหมายถึงอะไรกัน แน่นอนว่า “จิตรกรรม” คือ ภาพ 2 มิติ ที่ถูกถ่ายทอดจากจิตรกร ที่เขียนภาพที่มีลักษณะเป็นแบบอย่างของไทย ที่แตกต่างจากศิลปะประจำชาติอื่น ถึงแม้จะมีแต่ผลงานคล้ายคลึงกับของศิลปะประจำชาติอยู่บ้าง แต่ก็ดัดแปลงลายเส้น โครงสร้างสี หรือ สัญลักษณ์ ให้มีลักษณะเป็นแบบเฉพาะตัวได้อย่างสวยงาม และมีวิวัฒนาการของรูปแบบ รวมไปถึงกลวิธี ตลอดจนเทคนิคพิเศษต่าง ๆ ที่มีการพัฒนา อย่างต่อเนื่อง ซึ่งยังสามารถพัฒนาต่อไปอีกในอนาคต
จิตรกรรมไทย จะนิยมสร้างสรรค์และสื่อสารลักษณะของความเป็น “อุดมคติ” เป็นภาพ 2 มิติ วิธีการจัดองค์ประกอบจะนำวัตถุที่ใกล้วางไว้ตอนล่างของภาพ และวัตถุที่ไกลจะอยู่ด้านบนของภาพอาจจะใช้ลักษณะของสีแบบเอกรงค์ หรือหลากหลายสีสันก็เป็นได้
“ลายไทย” ส่วนที่เป็นลวดลาย จิตรกรจะนิยมวาดภาพที่เกี่ยวข้องกับพุทธประวัติ สถาปัตยกรรม อาคาร สิ่งของเครื่องใช้ ที่เครื่องประดับประดา วิถีชรวิต ซึ่งนำเอารูปร่างรูปทรง มาจากธรรมชาติ เช่น ลายเครือเถา ลายกนก ลายกระจัง เป็นต้น ทั้งที่เป็นรูปทรงจาก “คติความเชื่อ” และ”คตินิยม” ตัวอย่างเช่น รูปเทวดา รูปสัตว์ รูปพระพุทธเจ้า เป็นต้น
รูปแบบลักษณะภาพจิตรกรรมไทย ซึ่งจิตรกรได้สร้างสรรค์ออกแบบไว้ใน “รูปแบบอุดมคติ” ที่แสดงความคิดความสัมพันธ์เรื่องราว ที่แสดงอารมณ์ความรู้สึกในทิศทางของความสง่างาม ละเอียดละออ และแสดงอารมณ์ความรู้สึกปิติยินดี สุข หรือโศกเศร้า ด้วยอากัปกริยาท่าทางของตัวละคร ในภาพ หรือในบางครั้ง เน้นความตลกขบขันและสนุกสนาน ซึ่งเป็นผลมาจากที่จิตรกรได้ศึกษา แบะถ่ายทอดผ่านอารมณ์ สอดแทรกความรู้สึก ในรูปแบบจิตรกรรมไทยแบบประเพณีและจิตรกรรมไทยแนวประเพณี ได้อย่างลึกซึ้งอ่อนช้อยและสวยงาม
ส่วน “จิตรกรรมไทยแบบร่วมสมัย” (Thai Contemporary Painting) แน่นอนว่าไม่ใช่การเล่าตามขนบธรรมเนียมประเพณีเดิมเสมอไป แต่จิตรกรนิยมนำเสนอความก้าวหน้าทางวิทยาการ วิทยาศาสตร์ สังคม การเมือง วิถีชีวิตหรือประเด็นย่อยอื่นๆ ที่น่าสนใจ กลุ่มนี้จะคล้ายกับเป็นการสะท้อนคิด หรือ บันทึกสภาพแวดล้อมที่มีลักษณะของการเปลี่ยนแปลงของวิถีชีวิต หรือ ความรู้สึกนึกคิดค่านิยมของคนในสังคมสะท้อนให้เห็นเอกลักษณ์ใหม่ ทางวัฒนธรรมไทยที่เกิดขึ้น มีลักษณะรูปแบบที่คล้ายกับศิลปะตะวันตก (Contemporary painting)
ความสำคัญของจิตรกรรมไทย อาจจะกล่าวได้ว่า เป็นแหล่งรวมข้อมูลแบบสหวิทยาการ หรือ คลังขุมความรู้ จากอดีตถึงปัจจุบันที่แสดงให้เห็นถึงความเป็นชนชาติอารยะเก่าแก่ ที่ยาวนานจวบจนถึงยุคสมัยที่วิทยาการเทคโนโลยีมีความเจริญก้าวหน้าอย่างเช่นที่เราเห็นในปัจจุบัน หากจะกล่าวถึงความสำคัญในเรื่อง “คุณค่าของงานศิลป” ก็ยังมีในหลายด้านด้วยกัน ทั้งในแง่คุณค่าทางประวัติศาสตร์ คุณค่าในทางศิลปะ คุณค่าในเรื่องของการแสดงเชื้อชาติ สถาปัตยกรรม  สังคมวิทยา ประเพณีและวัฒนธรรม ทัศนคติค่านิยม หรือการศึกษานิเวศวิทยา เรื่องราวเกี่ยวข้องกับพระพุทธศาสนาหรือแม้แต่เศรษฐกิจการท่องเที่ยว ทั้งหมดนี้ล้วนเป็นความสำคัญของจิตรกรรมไทยท จิตรกรพยายามรังสรรค์ให้เห็นถึงมิติคุณค่าในแง่มุมที่แตกต่างกัน ตามทัศนะของผู้สร้างสรรค์
