Characteristics of a Good Speaker

A good speaker is someone who knows how to use words, tone, and body language effectively to convey messages to the audience. They should also adhere to etiquette and cultural norms to ensure their speech is meaningful and beneficial to the listeners.

Components of Speaking

1. Speaker – The individual delivering the message must have the ability to use both knowledge and art to effectively convey thoughts and emotions to the audience.

2. Message – The content being communicated should be valuable and worth the audience’s time. It should be well-prepared, structured, and rehearsed.

3. Medium – The means by which the message is delivered, such as verbal communication, electronic media, or body language.

4. Listener – The recipient of the message, whose ability to understand the speech depends on factors like skill, readiness, interest, knowledge background, and attitude.

Greeting and Social Interaction

Thailand is known as the “Land of Smiles,” where people commonly greet each other warmly, even strangers. A simple smile can help build friendly relationships. However, there are traditional etiquettes in greetings, such as saying “Sawasdee” (Hello) followed by “How are you?”

Guidelines for Greeting Properly:

1. Smile warmly and show genuine happiness when meeting someone.

2. Use socially accepted greetings, such as “Sawasdee krub/kha” (Hello).

3. Choose pleasant and positive conversation topics.

4. Display appropriate gestures based on social status—nodding, shaking hands (Western style), or light pats on the shoulder if familiar with the person.

Introducing Oneself and Others

When meeting new people, introductions are necessary before engaging in conversations. There are two types of introductions:

· Self-introduction – Introducing oneself to others.

· Introducing others – Introducing one person to another.

Situations where self-introduction is necessary:

1. During formal communication.

2. In special meetings or social gatherings.

3. When joining a new community or institution.

4. During a job interview.

5. When seeking assistance from others.
